Avigdor Arihka

Avigdor Arihka (1929-2010) was a painter born in Bukovina, Romania. His subjects were still life, landscapes, nudes and potraits. His drawings are one of my main influences. His lines are suggestive and range from delicate lines to completely covering the areas of the paper.

Frank Auerbach

Frank Auerback's work is recognisable with the thick apllication of paint, bold gestures and gashes of colour. He mainly uses charcoal, oil and occasionally Acrylic paint. Auerbach seeks to capture reality, create something new, to create something living and to add something to the world - how he puts it. He works doggedly, intensively and slowly to achieve that rawness that he seeks.

Euan Uglow

Euan Uglow is a British painter (1932-2000) who is well known for his nudes as well as portraits, still life's and landscapes. There are measurement marks visible where the paintings have been constructed with lines and marks, showing the process and development of his work. This is because he uses tools such as compasses and scaffolding to ensure his proportions are exact, and that both he and the model returned to the same position for each session working whilst he was working on a painting. This gives his paintings a structured appearance. 


Uglow nearly always worked from direct observation. The models were usually female and had to pose for him for many hours, as he worked at a slow pace. The environments and furnishings were often an important part of his subjects. His works shows his interest in geometry, often the models are arranged in such a way that they create stong geometric shapes within the picture. His pictures work as abstract compositions as well as representations of a figure. He often used strong colours as a backdrop to the model.
